Glossostigma elatinoides is a fast-growing, foreground aquatic plant native to New Zealand and Australia, prized for its ability to create a dense, low-growing green carpet across the substrate. With its small, spoon-shaped leaves and creeping growth habit, it is a staple in high-end aquascaping—particularly in Iwagumi and Nature Aquarium layouts. Its growth rate is fast under optimal conditions, allowing it to quickly spread across the foreground when given the right care. This plant thrives under high light intensity, which promotes compact, horizontal growth; insufficient lighting will cause it to grow vertically and lose its characteristic carpet effect. It strongly benefits from CO₂ injection, which enhances both speed and density of growth, and also helps prevent algae due to its rapid nutrient uptake.
