Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ is a popular aquatic plant species in the family Alismataceae, native to South America, particularly regions of Bolivia and surrounding areas. It is commonly used in freshwater aquascaping for its lush, carpet-forming capabilities and bright green coloration. This species is often confused with Echinodorus quadricostatus due to past taxonomic revisions, but it is now correctly classified under Helanthium. The plant features short-stemmed rosettes with lanceolate leaves that typically grow between 5 to 15 cm in height, making it ideal for the foreground of aquariums. It thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and benefits greatly from CO₂ supplementation and regular fertilization. Lighting should be moderate to high to maintain compact growth and vibrant color. In optimal conditions, H. bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ has a fast growth rate, often producing runners that allow it to propagate rapidly across the aquarium floor. It prefers a water temperature range of 22–28°C, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.2 and 7.5. The plant can adapt to a range of tank setups, from low-tech to high-tech aquariums, though growth is significantly enhanced in the latter. With proper care, it forms dense mats that provide excellent ground cover and shelter for small fish and invertebrates.
